INTENSE AND SUDDEN DENTAL PAIN. WHEN TO INTERVENE QUICKLY
Acute pulpitis is an inflammation of the tooth nerve that can cause very strong, throbbing, and persistent pain.
It is one of the most common dental emergencies and can appear suddenly, even during the night or on weekends.
At Oralthea24 affiliated centers, we intervene quickly to reduce pain, identify the cause, and protect the tooth with targeted and minimally invasive treatments.
WHAT IS ACUTE PULPITIS
Inside each tooth is the dental pulp, a tissue rich in nerves and blood vessels. When this structure becomes inflamed due to deep cavities, infiltrations, or trauma, acute pulpitis can develop. The inflammation increases internal pressure in the tooth and causes intense pain, often difficult to control without dental intervention.
SYMPTOMS OF ACUTE PULPITIS
- strong, throbbing pain
- heightened sensitivity to hot and cold
- spontaneous pain without stimuli
- discomfort during chewing
- pain radiating toward the head, ear, and jaw
- difficulty sleeping due to pain
MOST COMMON CAUSES
The main causes of acute pulpitis are:
- deep cavities
- infiltrations under old fillings
- dental fractures
- trauma
- bacterial infections and significant tooth wear
Early diagnosis often allows for more conservative intervention.
WHEN IT IS AN EMERGENCY
Acute pulpitis requires rapid evaluation especially if:
- pain increases during the night
- painkillers are not sufficient
- swelling appears
- pain prevents eating and sleeping
- the tooth becomes very sensitive to touch
Ignoring the problem can lead to nerve necrosis and the development of more extensive infections
HOW WE INTERVENE
After a thorough clinical and radiographic evaluation, the doctor can intervene with:
- immediate pain relief therapy
- cavity removal
- tooth reconstruction
- endodontic nerve treatment
- dental structure protection
The goal is to eliminate pain quickly and preserve the natural tooth when possible.
